Indian culture and traditions!

Hello everyone, wishing a belated happy new year to all of you.

Well 3M have been very busy this term, they have been learning about their new topic which is India.  They explored and learned about lots of traditions within Indian culture.  Their first day back they were very lucky to experience a traditional Indian breakfast which they tasted some pastries and drank some Mango Lassi.  It was a great kick start to our topic indeed experiencing and enjoying some of the sweet and delicious tastes of Indian food.

As part of a literacy lesson, 3M had the pleasure of Ms Gupta teaching them about traditional Indian clothes.  Some children even got to try some of the clothes on to really experience a taste of Indian life.  They thought of interesting questions to ask Ms Gupta and recorded lots of notes about Indian clothes.

3M have been working so hard researching about India using lots of non-fiction books and Ict.

However, there were times we did not need our books or the internet to find out more about India!  It has been so wonderful to have our very own Indian experts in 3M.  They have shared their knowledge and first hand experiences of traditions and Religion which has really enriched all of the children’s learning in this topic.  They taught us about artefacts associated with Hinduism and India which enlightened all of us about their culture.

Well we are coming to the end of our topic this week and at this stage the children have their minds full of information about India.  You should ask them some questions about what they have learned, I am sure you will find what they have to tell you very interesting!

Bye for now,
Ms Moonan.

The Romans and Mythical Creatures!!!!

Well 3M have been very busy since after half term, they started their new topic ‘The Romans’ which they have really enjoyed learning about. We learned a lot about the different types of Romans including Roman soldiers, Roman children, slaves and poor farmers. They learned about the different armour which the Roman soldiers used including the ‘Scutum’ which was the traditional shield used by the Roman soldiers. They designed their own shields by exploring with different shapes and creating patterns to complete their design. They painted the shields using the traditional colours of red and yellow which were the colours of the ‘Scutums’.

In literacy we have been studying various Greek and Roman myths such as ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’ and ‘Jason and the Argonauts’ which included mythical creatures. We created and designed our own mythical creatures and described these using adjectives and WOW words in Literacy. For our Literacy homework we had to make our own mythical creature and at the moment 3M’s classroom has been taken over by a lot of interesting and creative mythical creature designs. Fantastic effort and wonderful creativity from 3M!!!!

3M really enjoyed their role play to recreate parts of Greek and Roman myths which we studied. They used their Roman shields to protect them while fighting the mythical creatures and other Roman soldiers. They really got into the role of Roman Soldiers and had great fun indeed. They also worked really well as a team to form the ‘Turtoise formation’ which was used by the Roman Legions while to protect themselves in battle.

Bye for now,

On the day of the party the children are allowed to bring a change of clothes with them. (They will change in to their party outfits after lunch.) Children could bring a selection of fruit, sausage rolls, crisps, biscuits, etc. Please NO fizzy drinks, glass bottles or any food which contains nuts. If your child has a specific allergy to a food please provide them with their own party food selection.

Our Visit to Hainault Forest and Diwali Day.

Hello,

3M had a very busy last week coming up to half term. On a rather cold and crispy Thursday morning, year three took a brisk walk up to Hainault Forest where they explored the forest to find many different types of trees. We have been learning about Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings which include many detailed trees with a focus on his painting ‘The Almond Tree’ in particular.

We enjoyed ourselves by wandering through the leafy surroundings where we found lots of different trees and we took photos of them. The children became really inspired to draw similar trees for their art lesson in the afternoon. The visit was very worthwhile as everyone got really creative with their drawings and colouring of these.

On Friday we also celebrated the festival of Dwali in lots

of different ways. They enjoyed learning about a wide

variety of artefacts which are associated with Hinduism and

really experienced the culture of Hinduism with Miss

Alexander. They had lots of fun learning about the story of

Rama and Sita through role-play and dressed up in

wonderful costumes to celebrate this with Miss Gould.

We had lots of fun doing some traditional Indian dancing

and yet again year three tried their very best at dancing and

they were all just fantastic!

We also learned about the custom of exchanging food and

sweets during Dwali. They experienced this by tasting

traditional Indian sweet food and sharing the food with

each other which they thoroughly enjoyed. They tasted a

variety of sweet, savoury and spicy foods. In fact 3M

enjoyed the food that much, there was no food at all left

over by the end of the day!

Goodbye for now,

Miss Moonan.

International Week

3M had yet another enjoyable week as it was International week in our school.
3M got busy finding where the different continents were around the world and enjoyed learning about countries including Ireland, Australia and Spain. They learned about the Aboriginals in Australia and enjoyed very much creating Aboriginal patterns with Miss Gould. They had lots of fun learning about Spanish climate, culture and language with Miss Alexander.

They had great fun learning about the symbols which represent Ireland.

The children in year three even did Irish dancing for the first time! We danced to traditional Irish music and the children in year three made a really big effort to try their best to Irish dance. It has to be said that they were all very impressive.

They also learned how to speak some Gaelic words and phrases from Ireland. They might tell you some if you ask them.

Welcome back 3M! The last two days have been very exciting for us. We did lots of fun activities to get to know each other. We had treasure hunts in the class room to find out about each other and the teacher.

We went outside to create human venn diagrams by sorting out information about our family. We learned about our new topic ‘Reach for the Stars’ which is about working towards our goals. We agreed that we all want to strive to do our best in year 3.

Tomorrow 3M will be agreeing on our targets for the year ahead so we can continue to reach for the stars. It is very exciting for us all and we look forward to doing lots of new learning in the year ahead.
